I have over a decade in the Computer Repair and Networking business as my sole occupation, nearly a decade previous of working with computers secularly or as part of my employ.
Linux is my favorite platform, I use it for servers in any opportunity where it fits, Ubuntu made computers fun again!
I have worked with Windows Servers from NT through the latest 2008. Desktops from win3.1 through Windows 7 (Which I currently LOVE!). Networking of small businesses is one of my specialties, solving connectivity and collaboration problems efficiently without reinventing the wheel.
I don't limit myself to just Microsoft only solutions, I like to play the field for the best tool for the job. There are literally hundreds of tools and applications out there that do the same thing, often better and for less or no money, than Microsoft's products. Don't get me wrong, I love Microsoft, and the innovative and powerful tools and products they make. It is all about the right tool for the job, and sometimes that tool comes from the most unlikely place. I really enjoy the challenge of finding solutions to your challenges, just ask me sometime!
It has been my grand pleasure of working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska for over 10 years. They took a chance on a young budding independent network consultant, and I can never fully repay them for their kindness. We worked together moving all their disparate systems onto Windows 2000, then XP and 2003. We have been able to heavily leverage the power of Virtualization using VMWare's excellent products. We also use a variety of FOSS (Free Open Source Software) packages for different purposes. But all tech aside, the staff at BBBS of Alaska is the best group of people you will ever have a chance to work with, and if you can manage it, you should talk to them about their excellent Child Mentoring programs or make a donation!
Ubuntu... best thing since sliced bread! Every year since the mid 90s, I would try out a different Linux distribution (of which there are dozens), each offering some fundamental or minor difference over the others. Every year I would install it on a computer and then... "now what?" I would often get stuck with some mundane task that I couldn't do with Linux... or at least not without an hour or two of tweaking. It is hard to objectively test Linux when you are born of the Windows world. Then, Ubuntu came along. It is a great distro, with a rock-solid base in Debian. It had many common things built-in, with no fuss to make it work. It was as close to a drop-in replacement for Windows as there ever was, and it worked on ANY hardware! But what really sets it apart is the community around it, it is a helpful brotherhood of enthusiasts who are genuinely interested in your solving your issue or giving you the help you ask for rather than rebuking you for not reading the manual. You can do ANYTHING in Ubuntu, just by doing a google search for "How to install XYZ on Ubuntu", see this demonstration. It still has a way to go before it is a real desktop OS, however it is superb for servers. I would love to show you how to save $700 on your next server... just ask!
